The KSSSA Term One games hosted in Eldoret ended last Saturday and Moi Kamusinga Girls made a podium finish for the tenth competition in a row.

Kamusinga were silver medalists after losing 15-16 in a hotly contested final against St Joseph’s Girls Kitale. It was only the third time the school lost a final in the last ten competitions with the other losses coming in 2016 and 2019.

En route to the final, Kamusinga Girls had to dispatch Dagoretti Mixed, Dr Charles Muli and Miranga Secondary in pool B to book a semifinal with Nyathuna whom they beat 29-07 to reach the final.

ATTRIBUTES

The success of handball in the school located in Kimilili Sub County in Bungoma is attributed to their coach, Mr. Godfrey Simiyu.

Simiyu teaches History, Geography, and Computer Science and is also a disciplinarian who is a master at what he does.

He is also accredited by the international handball Federation, holding the Grade C qualification. The tactician has a rich CV having served as the coach and manager of the Kenyan U 17 handball team.

OTHER COACHING ASSIGNMENTS

Apart from coaching the school, he doubles up as the coach of the Rangers Handball team which has an academy and men and female teams that participate in the National League.

Through his tutorship, Kamusinga has not only won 7 national titles but also emerged overall winners at three FEASSSA.

Simuyu guided the school to their maiden East Africa glory in 2013 when Uganda hosted the competition. They won the second trophy on home soil in 2016 and the third in 2019 in Tanzania.

Being a disciplinarian, Simiyu upholds the integrity of the competitions and believes in building talents from scratch.

“Winning has no shortcuts you must train and that’s our strength. We play the old girls once or twice a week which strengthens and sharpens our attack and defense. Playing only legible students and no repeating because of playing is our policy. We believe in Play clean win clean just like ADAK.” Said Mr. Simiyu.

Coach Simiyu also highlighted the support he receives from the administration in facilitating the team which is crucial for the overall success that has been witnessed in the past decade.
