The highly anticipated second edition of the Tony Wakhungu Memorial Football Tournament is set to return in December 2024, promising an exciting showdown of talent and community spirit.
This year’s tournament will take place from December 16th to 21st and will feature 16 teams battling it out in a knockout format, with the finals set to deliver a thrilling conclusion to the competition.
The tournament, which honors the memory of Tony Wakhungu, one of the 149 students who tragically lost their lives in the Garissa University terrorist attack in 2015, holds a special place in the hearts of many.
Tony was the brother of Eng. Brian Anyanza, who serves as the Patron of the tournament. As an avid football fan, Tony’s love for the sport inspired the creation of this event, which aims not only to celebrate his life but also to foster positive change in the community.
The main goals of the tournament are to nurture football talent among the youth, combat teen pregnancies, drug abuse and crime, and provide constructive engagement during the long holiday season.
This year, the tournament will also shine a spotlight on an important cause—raising awareness for blood donation.
Organizers aim to collect at least 500 units of blood to support local health facilities, inspired by the victims of the Garissa attack who tragically died from excessive bleeding.
The inaugural tournament, held last year, was a huge success, attracting over 28,000 fans.
Chebosi FC emerged as champions after a stunning 3-0 victory over Mahanga FC, in a final that took place at Chebosi High School Grounds in Bololi Ward.
The event is expected to grow even bigger this year, with hopes of more partners to enhance the success of the tournament.
Eng. Brian Anyanza, alongside family and friends, continues to generously sponsor this event, keeping Tony Wakhungu’s legacy alive while positively impacting the community.
The tournament is poised to be a highlight of the holiday season, not just for football lovers but for the entire community, with a message of unity, hope and giving back.
