The contractors working on the construction of over 2,000 affordable housing units in Bungoma County have been urged to hire local workers and suppliers.
The call came from the Western Region Project Lead, Eng. Polycarp Onyango, who officially handed over the project early in August, 2024.
“We have instructed all the contractors to employ local workers unless the required expertise is not available,” he said, emphasizing that the project is not only about infrastructure but also about creating employment and economic opportunities for the people of Bungoma.
The project, situated in Musikoma Ward, Kanduyi Constituency, was initially launched by President William Ruto during his February visit to the region.
The President highlighted the development as transformative, aimed at improving living conditions and boosting the local economy.
The housing project, expected to be completed within 18 months, aims to provide affordable homes to residents and support the county’s economic growth.
Onyango noted that delays in the design phase had pushed back the initial timeline, but the team is now focused on meeting the new deadlines.
Local artisans, such as welders, carpenters and fabricators have also been encouraged to register with the authority to be eligible for work opportunities at the site.
The Kanduyi Affordable Housing Project is part of a broader national initiative to address housing shortages and provide quality, low-cost homes across the country.
As construction progresses, local involvement is expected to play a key role in the successful implementation of the project.
