Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts Ababu Namwamba handed Harambee Stars a cheque of Ksh. 10,778,500 to facilitate their preparation for the four nations tournament to be played in Mauritius later this month.
Speaking during the handover of the cheque, the cabinet secretary assured Harambee Stars of full government support as they prepare for the forthcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers that will be cohosted by USA and Mexico.
‘The first love for government in terms of football is the national team. And we (the government) want to make sure that we offer the support necessary for you (Harambee Stars) to perform well in national assignments.’ Namwamba said.
He further said that they will support the coach and his technical bench to ensure that they delivered the desired results.
‘We want to support you (Harambee Stars) in terms of the technical bench. We want to support the coach, together with your technical team to make sure that your issues are sorted. I have personally talked to you (Harambee Stars Coach – Engin Firat), I am familiar with the challenges that you have faced previously and want to assure you that we are sorting those challenges,’ he added.
The funds provided will cover player allowances, and their travel tickets among other expenses to ensure that the team fully focuses on the assignment ahead.
Harambee Stars will leave for Mauritius on June 10th and are scheduled to play three matches in the one-week tournament.
Kenya will play their first match on 11th June 2023 against Djibouti before facing Pakistan three days later. They will play their final game against hosts Mauritius on 18th June 2023.
