In the intricate landscape of Kenyan politics, a prominent figure is emerging, poised to potentially become the next Luhya kingpin.

Cleophas Malala, known for his strategic political maneuvers and his connection to grassroots initiatives, has steadily risen through the ranks, capturing attention both within his region and on the national stage.

From his beginnings as the Makhiakalo Ward MCA to his current role as a Cabinet Secretary without portfolio and Secretary-General of President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, Malala’s journey has been marked by persistence and calculated moves.

His tenure as the Senator for Kakamega County and his ambitious run for the Governor’s seat demonstrate his dedication to public service and his determination to secure influential positions despite his young age.

One of Malala’s most notable achievements has been the creation of the Malala Super Cup, a football tournament that has inadvertently become a catalyst for political collaboration.

THE POWER OF MALALA SUPER CUP

The tournament’s platform in Mumias provided the backdrop for a significant development in Kenyan politics, as it paved the way for Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula and Amani National Congress (ANC) counterpart Musalia Mudavadi to join forces with Ruto, forming the Kenya Kwanza coalition. This alliance has reshaped the political landscape in Western Kenya.

Expanding on his success, Malala has announced plans to revamp the Malala Super Cup, extending its reach beyond Kakamega County to encompass the entire Western Kenya region.

This strategic move not only demonstrates his understanding of the region’s affinity for football but also serves as a calculated attempt to gain popularity across Luhyaland. By tapping into a shared passion, Malala aims to strengthen his rapport with the local population.

Despite the presence of Wetang’ula and Mudavadi in key government positions within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, their impact on Western Kenya’s development has remained a subject of debate. Malala recognizes this gap and is positioning himself to address it.

His aspirations to leverage his position as Secretary-General of the ruling UDA party to advocate for significant development projects within Western Kenya reflect his ambition to secure tangible benefits for his constituents.

A few days ago, Malala enlisted mixed reactions from political pundits on forums when he lead a delegation of leaders from Western Kenya to meet President William Ruto, surprisingly, without the involvement of Mr. Wetang’ula and Mudavadi.

ALTERNATIVE TO WETANG’ULA, MUDAVADI?

Among those in the delegation were Wetang’ula’s political enemy and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati and other Azimio leaders.

Already, this gesture sent some signals that Malala is coming up as an alternative to Wetang’ula and Mudavadi in the Luhyaland.

Malala’s potential influence within the government could be a pivotal factor in shaping the destiny of Western Kenya. If he succeeds in driving the initiation of substantial infrastructure and developmental projects, his stature within both the region and the larger political arena could grow significantly.

FORCE TO RECKON

This could position him as a formidable force not only within the Luhya community but also as a key player in the national discourse.

Cleophas Malala’s journey from a local MCA to a prominent figure in national politics is a testament to his determination and political acumen. Through his creation of the Malala Super Cup and his plans to expand its reach, he has showcased an ability to connect with his constituents and cultivate a loyal following.

As he seeks to leverage his position within the ruling party to effect meaningful change in Western Kenya, the possibility of him becoming the next Luhya kingpin gains momentum.

Only time will tell if Cleophas Malala can navigate the complex political landscape and solidify his place as a transformative leader within the region and beyond.
