The State Department for Housing and Urban Development on On February 24, 2025, transferred ownership of two ESP Market Sites in Busia County to contractors, aligning with the Kenya Kwanza Government’s BETA Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development and women’s empowerment.

The handover ceremony for the new market projects at Mungatsi in Nambale Sub-County and Aroma in Matayos Sub-County was overseen by Senior Director Polycarp Onyango from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, with Busia County Governor Paul Otuoma in attendance.

Mr. Onyango conveyed President William Ruto’s directive to the contractors, emphasizing the use of local labor and the procurement of materials from the community whenever possible. This approach aims to boost the local economy and empower residents through these initiatives.

“These initiatives are aimed at benefitting locals, and therefore, President William Ruto’s directive is that procurement of materials and labour should be sourced from locals,” said Eng. Onyango.

Additionally, Senior Director Onyango announced upcoming projects for Busia County, including the development of a modern city at Nasewa, complete with a planned airport within its boundaries.

“We also have other projects lined up, including the development of modern city at Nasewa with a planned airport within its boundaries.”

During the groundbreaking ceremony for the ESP Market projects, Governor Otuoma urged Busia residents to remain patient with his administration and offer their support as he works to fulfill his mandate.

“These projects may take time but I urge the residents of Busia County to be patient with me as we work around with the national government to complete everything,” he stated.

He highlighted various national government projects benefiting the county, such as the Nasewa EPZ, ongoing market constructions and those in the tendering phase, including the Jumuia Market.

The governor expressed confidence that the completion of these initiatives would drive significant growth in Busia.

“Once completed, these initiatives will drive significant growth in Busia County.”
