Bungoma, a quiet town in Western Kenya, rarely grabbed headlines beyond routine political updates. That changed dramatically on Monday 13th of January 2026, when 23-year-old Flora Anziwa Anyango, a Form Three dropout from Mbakalu ward in Tongaren Constituency, arrived at Posta Grounds near the railway line.

What began as a seemingly improbable — even humorous — stunt quickly evolved into a major spectacle. Starting at 3:04 p.m. (1504 hours) on the Monday, Flora embarked on a 74-hour tree-hugging challenge to raise awareness about rampant corruption in Kenya and beyond. Her goal: surpass the 72-hour mark set by Truphena Muthoni in Nyeri, who hugged a tree to protest environmental degradation.

Skeptics abounded, but Flora’s determination drew crowds. What started as a solo act transformed Posta Grounds into an impromptu pilgrimage site, attracting local supporters and international viewers via viral livestreams on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

The turning point came from an unexpected ally: Hopkins Crescent Hospital. Moved by Flora’s resilience and committed to community care, the hospital stationed an ambulance beside her for the duration.

Paramedics worked in shifts, massaging her swollen feet, monitoring vital signs — including body temperature, blood pressure, and blood sugar — and standing ready for any emergency.

By Wednesday, the final day, thousands flooded the grounds, chanting victory songs as the clock ticked down. Content creators, journalists, and broadcasters captured every moment, with millions tuning in worldwide. At precisely 3:03 p.m. (1503 hours), the crowd erupted in a thunderous countdown: “Ten… nine… eight… seven… six… five… four… three… two… one… Hurray!”

Cheers, dances, and ululations filled the air — a historic moment in which everyone felt part of something bigger.

Attention immediately shifted to Flora’s well-being. The Hopkins paramedics rushed in, providing immediate care before maneuvering the ambulance through the massive crowd.

The driver navigated patiently along the Musikoma-Kanduyi dual carriageway — just one kilometer — to the hospital near the Shell filling station.

Supporters trailed the ambulance, gathering outside the facility to chant patriotic songs in praise of Flora and the hospital’s unwavering support. Overnight, Hopkins Hospital became a beloved symbol of compassion.

Global livestream audiences followed Flora’s recovery as media outlets interviewed her from her hospital bed. Thousands of videos flooded social media, amplifying the story further.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka, who had kept his distance during the challenge, arrived to congratulate her. Facing resistance from the crowd outside when he attempted to speak, he departed for his nearby residence.

One video of the incident, captured by this writer, garnered over 200,000 combined views on TikTok (140,000) and Facebook (78,000), with captions spotlighting “Hopkins.” Searches for the hospital surged, propelling it to trending status..

Inside the hospital, Director Dr. Omweri Ombonye addressed the media, announcing that Hopkins would waive Flora’s entire medical bill and provide ongoing free care. Tears streamed down onlookers’ cheeks as he spoke.

“As Hopkins Hospital, we understand the possible medical challenges that may arise following this tedious challenge,” Dr. Ombonye said.

“We are here to ensure all her organs are functioning normally before we discharge her. We will remain committed to her medical needs until we are satisfied she is strong enough to return to her family.”

From relative obscurity to a viral sensation, Hopkins Hospital Bungoma didn’t orchestrate a traditional marketing campaign — it simply showed genuine care at a pivotal moment.

In doing so, it earned worldwide recognition, proving that authentic compassion can create the most powerful and enduring publicity.

Today, ask anyone in Kenya — or anyone who followed the livestreams — and they’ll tell you: Who hasn’t heard of Hopkins Hospital Bungoma?
