After16 teams lining up at the Bungoma Airstrip grounds from December 29th to 30th, 2021, Umri FC overcame Griffins FC to bag Ksh50,000 at the Salama Supercup.
The two sides had battled to a barren draw after an electrifying encounter in the finals before Umri dismissed Griffins from the post-match penalties at a fully-packed makeshift stadium.
The Salama Supercup tournament is sponsored by Salama Bakery Ltd which produces the Western Toast bread that will be celebrating 50 years in the baking industry since being established.
According to the Salama Bakery CEO Mr. Jamal Ahmed, the tournament is aimed at remembering his late brother Mohamed ‘Hamado” Ahmad who passed on two years ago and is part of his legacy to nurture local talent.
“We are holding this second edition to honour my elder brother Hamado who left us in December, 2019. My brother loved talent and this is the only way we can remember him,” said Jamal, popularly known as Muli.
Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah, whose Malalah Supercup has received millions of accolades from across the country, was the Chief Guest during the opening fixture in Bungoma.
The youthful Senator, whose love for young talent is well known since his days as a stage director and playwright, donated twenty quality balls to the Salama Supercup tournament.
Bungoma CECM for Roads, Collins Mukhongo, graced the finals, donating Ksh20,000 to the tournament and an extra tokens of appreciation to the finalists.
Griffins FC despite the disappointment, walked home with Ksh30,000 to climatize their festive season.
The participating teams were majorly local clubs from within Bungoma town with the organizers targeting to have more teams from across the Bungoma County.
