There was a gripping showdown at Bungoma High School Grounds on Sunday when FC Barcelona from Bulondon village, Sang’alo, clinched the FKF Bungoma Branch Mini-League Championship title via post-match penalties, edging out Compel Youth to claim the Ksh100,000 prize.

The eight-team tournament culminated in a tense final where both teams squandered several scoring opportunities, resulting in a goalless draw after regular time.

The match’s fate was decided by spot kicks, with Compel Youth missing their first three attempts, while Barcelona held their nerve to secure the victory and earn promotion to the Regional League.

FKF Bungoma Branch Chairman-elect, Eng. Denis Simiyu, praised both teams for their spirited performances.

“I congratulate the winners and runners-up for showcasing exceptional football talent,” said Simiyu, who also serves as patron of third-tier Bungoma Superstars FC. In a bold move to support grassroots football, he announced that the branch would cover affiliation fees for all eight participating teams as a token of appreciation.

The road to the final saw Barcelona dominate Kanzu FC with a 3-0 victory in the first semi-final, while Compel Youth secured a hard-fought 3-2 win over Lutungu.

This year’s championship marked a significant milestone, with the prize money increased tenfold from Ksh10,000 to Ksh100,000.

“We are dedicated to elevating football standards in Bungoma and this increase in prize money is just the beginning as we aim to further dignify and nurture our young talents.”

The event was attended by Bungoma Women Representative aspirant Nancy Nanyama Kibaba, who livestreamed the match on her Facebook page, “Nancy Kibaba.” She contributed Ksh18,000 to be shared between the finalists and pledged ongoing support for football development, even if elected to office.

Other notable attendees included Branch Vice Chair Peter Makali, Secretary-General Ezekiel Murani, and Bungoma County Assembly Human Resource Manager Abraham Simiyu.
