Thousands of football enthusiasts packed the school grounds, creating an electric atmosphere for the opening matches.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Mukhwana emphasized the critical role of sports in combating social ills that often surge during long school holidays.
“I have today launched the Dr. Juma Mukhwana Football Tournament to keep our young men and even women busy during this long holidays,” he said.
“Many of them, if left unattended to, indulge themselves into drug abuse and early pregnancy, which is an unfortunate thing.”
The PS highlighted how idleness during the festive period exposes vulnerable youth to peer pressure and risky behaviors, including substance abuse and unprotected sexual activity leading to teenage pregnancies.

By organizing structured football activities, the tournament seeks to provide a healthy outlet, foster discipline, and build community bonds among participants.
Winners of the competition will receive cash prizes, full team uniforms and footballs, incentives designed to motivate participation and reward excellence.
Local residents praised the initiative, noting its potential to deter youth from destructive paths.
“This is exactly what our children need—something to keep them active and away from trouble,” said Mr. John Wafula, a parent from the Nalondo area.
The tournament’s reflects Dr. Mukhwana’s commitment to grassroots development in his home constituency, blending sports with social welfare to address pressing community challenges.
As matches continue over the coming weeks, organizers hope it will inspire similar programs and leave a lasting impact on Kabuchai’s youth.
