There were buckets of tears as former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati hosted the beneficiaries of the first cohort of the Bungoma County Scholarship Programme.

Song, tears and dance dominated the atmosphere as Hon Wycliffe Wangamati hosted a section of the second cohort of scholarship beneficiaries to lunch at his Ndengelwa home.

In his speech, Mr. Wangamati congratulated the Class of 2019 for their sterling performance during their KCSE, urging them to keep discipline as they transition to the next level of their llife.

Out of the 522 students whose results had been received, 14 have scored scored A; 72 students with A- (minus), 106 scored B+ (plus), 67 scored B (plain), 98 scored B- (minus), 120 students scored C+ (plus), 42 scored C (plain) while 4 scored C- (minus).

The scholarship was first unveiled in 2018 to support bright kids from vulnerable backgrounds. Last year, Ian Mwai Toyota of Kakamega School, one of the 500 pioneer students on Wangamati Scholarship, posted an A plain of 87.08 points to emerge sixth nationally and first in Western.

Thanks to a co-operation between the County and Equity Bank initiated in 2021, some 17 students from the first Cohort that scored A are now working with Equity Bank.

The partnership opens doors to the alumni of the Governor’s Scholarship to work at Equity Bank and access university education in Ivy league universities around the world.

Already, some of the beneficiaries have secured placements and full scholarships to attend top universities in the world. Tatyana Khwaka Wawire, one of the pioneer beneficiaries of the scholarship fund has been admitted to Princeton University in the US to study architecture.

Present at the function were MCAs Anthony Lusenaka (Minority), Millie Masungo (Misikhu), Jeremiah Kuloba (Township), Aggrey Mulongo (Kibingei), and Cornelias Makhanu (Khalaba).
